ANNIVERSARY
I
Our frozen lexicon has finally iced this lake completely over—except here, where our bodies keep the rough edges at bay. But for how long? We are getting older and the temperature keeps dropping.

Metaphor is not the same as truth. You complain about the words I use and the things I say, my “clichés,” but love is a choice. You chose to once, you can again—and if you don’t, tell me, which of us will miss this body of water more?

Nathaniel Lachenmeyer is an award-winning disabled author of books for children and adults.
