MAYA JACYSZYN
two does
The rangale smells like
evergreen and wild rice,
like you.
The nape of your fur
milk-white, tail flicking, a
caboose-view trailing, I keep
you in sight.
I’m happy here --
under sunset, trekking to
new trees, munching on
juneberries.
In the spring, I try to forget
how others use your scent --
honeysuckle and game,
a mate.
Think of how heavy antlers
must be.
And as we lay down by
the football fields, nestled
in New Year’s first snow,
I wonder,
if only they knew
who we really are.
